Living without god.

There’s something to be said about living in a godless universe as opposed to one filled with ghosts, devils, demons and supernatural creators, all bent on taking the fun out of life.  When we were kids, long before anyone convinced us that life was a test to see if we were good enough to get into heaven, we instinctively knew what life was all about.  We usually awoke with a smile on our face anticipating the fun we were going to have that day.  There were no ideas about sacrificing good times so we could gain the favor of some mythical being who lived in the sky.

I remember my first day at Catholic school.   We had just moved to Philadelphia from rural Florida and it was my first time living in a big city.  Everything was new and strange and I longed to return to my old life with trees and wide open spaces instead of the concrete jungle I found myself in.  To make matters worse, I was transferring from a public school to a Catholic school and had no idea what to expect.

Teaching kids about god is not easy especially when the new kid has not yet learned that there are certain questions you just don’t ask.  Questions like what was god doing for the eternity before he decided to drop Adam and Eve into the Garden of Eden?  Or if god was all-knowing and all-powerful, why did he have to create a son so he could die on the cross to atone for humanity’s sins?  If it were me, I would have just crated a sinless humanity that went right to heaven without all the pain and suffering of being born into an existence where death is waiting just around the corner to take everything away.
