Why we worship imaginary gods?

Uncomfortable Questions for the Faithful

Throughout recorded history humanity has worshiped an almost endless array of spirits, gods, and imagined supernatural deities.  There is nothing new in any of this since countless generations have been very aware that previous generations used to worship gods that have long since gone out of style.  And yet, for some reason, each new generation seems unable to see how their current flavor of beliefs are no more real than the beliefs of previous generations.

Today’s faithful are no exception and like countless generations before them, they will quickly tell you that they know deep inside that the supernatural entities they learned to worship are somehow different from all the previous false gods and are in fact, the one true god(s).

So why is it that we appear unable to learn from our past mistakes or the mistakes of previous generations?  What prevents us from seeing that Allah is no more real than Jesus or Buddha or Zeus, or any of the long list of false gods we have worshiped down through the ages?

GIVING UP HONESTY AND TRUTH FOR THE SAKE OF FAITH

The historical evidence says there must be a reason why we humans are suspectable to believing in things that our rational minds tell us do not really exist.  Why so many find it easy to let go of fundamental moralities like honesty and truth for the sake of faith is somewhat bewildering even if we are coached along the way by charismatic salesmen warning we better buy our way into heaven before it is too late.

Faith is nothing less than a more palatable way to say “superstition” that today gets mistakenly viewed as a positive character trait.  And yet when it comes to getting proper medical care, few would consider taking their children to a faith healer.  Ironically, there is no great mystery in any of this other than why a species that considers itself as the most intelligent species in the universe could or would act with such willfully blind stupidity.
