Well… To answer this, you would have to define exactly what one means by “evil.” If you mean something connected to the devil or so-called evil spirits, then the answer would be NO. On the other hand, if you mean something tied to the harm done by humanity to others, then the answer would be a resounding YES. In that case we own the evil that dwells within and it is us no matter how some try and claim “the devil made me do it!”

“THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT!”

Humanity has a tendency to disown the harm we do to each other by blaming it on an imagined war between supernatural forces of good and evil where the prize for the victor is the human soul. Of course it is the devil who tempts us to do the evil that we ordinarily would not do on our own since this version of reality paints us like mindless fools. The story strongly implies we are incapable of antisocial behavior unless so-called “evil” thoughts are implanted in us first by the villain in this very old story.

Of course, the social reasoning is that we should hold each other responsible for any failures to resist temptation that result in harm to others. But even though we welcome the idea of retribution when it comes to other’s behavior, most of us seem willing to make exceptions when it comes to our own antisocial behavior.

I love you, buddy! Yep, I remember. They came in last at the Olympics, then retired to promote alcoholic beverages! The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers.
